Herricks Board of Education Meeting Features Recognitions and Updates

The Herricks Public Schools celebrated students for extraordinary academic and musical achievements at its Sept. 26 Board of Education Meeting. The evening also included district updates and a recognition from BBS Architects.

Nicole Chen, Jenna Chin, Gloria Kang, Rohan Khanderia, Christopher Lum, Daniel Min, Michael Paciullo, Shreya Patel and Rahul Singhal were honored for being named National Merit Semifinalists based on their PSAT scores. Violist Karina Ng was commended for her selection to the All-National Symphony Orchestra.

Steve Walsh of BBS Architects shared updates on the district’s bond referendum, noting that phase III is complete and steps are now being taken to begin the planning of phase IV projects. These items including the high school curtain wall and fitness center and districtwide bathroom and window replacements.

Mr. Walsh also announced that the district was featured in American School and University magazine for the new Herricks High School cafeteria, which was identified as an outstanding design. He presented Superintendent of Schools Dr. Fino Celano and members of the Board with a commemorative plaque displaying the article.

Members of the administration and the Board also discussed the first Ed Leader seminar, which included parents, teachers, students, alumni, professionals from the community and a Hofstra University dean. The group engaged in a meaningful conversation about the “portrait of a Herricks graduate,” focusing on the skills and competencies that the district aims for students to have when they leave high school so that they can be prepared for future jobs – many of which have not even been created yet.
