Herricks rookie team wins award and advances in Lego competition
A team of four Herricks students competed in the regional qualifier for First Lego League held on Feb. 2 at Huntington High School and achieved outstanding success. The team, known as the STEAM Mates, won a Core Values-Inspiration award and qualified to advance to the next level of the competition; the Long Island Championship, to be held on March 3.
The STEAM Mates, comprised of high-schooler Kaanan Datt and middle school students Manu Agarwal, Sanjana Lodha and Shreyas Datt, have been meeting since September to address the challenge set forth in this year’s “first into orbit” theme. They designed, built and programed a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® to solve missions on a table-top playing field at the competition. They also presented a research project titled “Space Foosball” to address the emotional and physical needs of astronauts during long space travel.
This is the 15th year that First Lego League has enabled students on Long Island to explore STEM through building and problem-solving. All four Herricks students were competing for the first time.
