Culture and Music Coalesce at Herricks HS

Culture and Music Coalesce at Herricks HS

Herricks High School hosted a special concert titled ¡Canta Cuba! featuring SUNY Potsdam’s Crane Concert Choir and Latin Ensemble, on Oct. 22. The program celebrates the 150th anniversary of Cuba’s Día de la Cultura Nacional Cubana, or Cuban Culture Day.

The Crane Concert Choir highlighted songs by Cuban composers Calixto Álvarez, Wilma Alba Cal, Tania León, Miguel Matamoros, Esteban Salas y Castro, Compay Segundo and Moisés Simons, and the Latin Ensemble performed traditional Afro-Cuban pieces. Performers shared interesting facts that emphasized the history and culture connected with each piece, and involved Herricks students by inviting them onstage to dance to the lively rhythms.

Herricks Director of Music and Performing Arts Anissa Arnold collaborated with Director of World Languages, Language Immersion and English as a New Language Francesco Fratto to maximize the educational impact for Herricks students. Following the concert, the Potsdam guests led two assemblies at Herricks High School. One was for all Language Immersion Program students in grades 6-12 and was conducted in Spanish, and the other was attended by members of the music department and AP Spanish classes. The presenters discussed Cuban music, which teachers also covered in the classrooms before the events, and engaged students in the experience.

SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music emphasizes cultural diversity within ensemble programming. The Crane Concert Choir is a select, auditioned, mixed vocal ensemble directed by Dr. Jeffrey Francom. This performance is the first of several this year that will focus on diverse Latin American cultures prevalent in New York State. The Crane Latin Ensemble is dedicated to promoting Latin American dance music, specializing in Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican traditional musical styles, including Cha-Cha, Cumbia, Guaguancó, Mambo, Son and even a bit of Reggaetón. Directed by Dr. Peter McCoy, the ensemble collaborates with traditional artists.
