Herricks Students Selected for All-State Music Festival

Herricks Students Selected for All-State Music Festival

Herricks High School received 27 letters of acceptance for students selected to participate in this year’s All-State Music Festival, which will be held in Rochester, New York from Nov. 29-Dec. 2.  The annual festival, sponsored by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is considered the highest honor a school musician can attain.  Thirteen were accepted to perform in ensembles, while 14 were selected as alternates.

In order to be considered as an All-State musician, a student must receive a perfect score in a formal NYSSMA audition performance, requiring preparation and performance of a level six (most difficult) solo, a sight-reading exam, and performance of three scales. More than 6,000 high school sophomores and juniors audition for All-State each year and only 800 are accepted state-wide.

The Herricks All-State musicians are Justin Cheung (bass I), Angela Joseph (alto II), Christina Kim (violin), Shazmin Lakhani (alto II), Jeremy Lau (trumpet), Joanna Lau (flute), Karina Ng (viola), Michael Paciullo (trombone), Kyla Surajabali (soprano II), Alexandra Tan (violin), Darren Yang (double bass), Kaitlyn Yoo (violin) and Ju Young Yi (clarinet). Alternates are Sitara Cherian (soprano II), Matthew Cosola (alto saxophone and jazz alto), Ethan Feng (double bass), Eric Fok (violin), Austin Kim (cello), Gloria Kang (cello), Winston Liu (violin), Christopher Piccirillo (clarinet), Andrew Tsai (violin), Sarah Winkler (soprano II), Samuel Yang (violin) and Hanna Yen (viola).

The students will rehearse and perform with nationally recognized conductors in musical ensembles including a wind ensemble, a symphonic band, a symphony orchestra, a treble chorus, mixed chorus and a jazz ensemble.
