Herricks Euro-Challenge Team Moves Ahead to the Semi Finals

A team of Herricks High School students participated in the Euro Challenge competition on March 29 at Credit Suisse, where they rose to the task of addressing economic-related issues that confront the euro area that consists of 19 European Union countries who have adopted the euro as their form of currency. The Herricks group placed within the top 12 at this event out of approximately 40 other presentations, and advanced to the semi-final round.

Under the guidance of advisors Melissa Jacobs and Doug Kramer, sophomores Felisha Ma, Rushikesh Patel, Michelle Dong and Melissa Lau along with freshmen Carrie Hsu and Derrick Chen provided an outstanding proposal.

The Euro Challenge tests students’ knowledge and understanding of the European economy and the euro by asking them to describe the current economic situation in the euro area. It was launched by the  Delegation of the European Union to the United States in partnership with The Moody’s Foundation and with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York serving as program advisor. The program is supported by BNP Paribas, Credit Suisse, and many other financial institutions.

Contenders are required to select one specific challenge and illustrate it with examples from one country, then recommend a policy or policies for addressing the issue identified in that area. They are required to include a discussion about the impact of a single currency on the policy choices.
