On Dec. 19, students at Center Street School took on a challenge that incorporated science, technology, engineering and mathematics as part of an event dubbed, “DeSTEMber.” Laura Leicht’s fifth-grade class and Rachel Brillon’s fourth-grade class gathered to put their problem-solving and collaborative skills to the test.
The students were presented with the task of creating ski lift models, using only materials and tools provided by their teachers. Paper plates, cardboard tubes, paper cups, cotton balls and other basic items, along with resourcefulness and teamwork, led to the construction of ramps with pulleys, levers, and inclined planes based upon the Rube Goldberg Machine. They worked in teams with members of their families to find solutions to the design challenge.
The groups then tested their models, using marbles to represent the skiers.
