    Principal’s Message                              May-June 2019

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is hard to believe that we have nearly reached the end of the school year for 2018-2019!  It seems like just yesterday that we were lined up at the front door on the First Day, ready to welcome in a new year together.   I’m happy to say that it has been another terrific year at Center Street, and my thanks go out to the students, staff members and parents for contributing every day to the excellence that is ours.

The PTA has been a major contributor to our programs and projects over the course of the year.  From providing school-wide Yoga and other Arts in Education programs, through the terrific Harry Potter PARP week, and inclusive of many great events like, Pumpkin Patch, Spirit Weeks, Scholastic Book Fairs, Snowman Shop, Flag Day Barbeque, etc., the PTA has provided richness to our school experiences.  I would also like to thank the PTA for the generous Grant money which has been used this year to fund installations and equipment for our Outdoor Learning Center.

This is a very busy time of the year filled with many exciting events for our families.  Last week we had our Spring Concert featuring the Band and our 5th grade chorus; this week we had the second portion of the Spring Concert, featuring the Orchestra and our 4th grade chorus.  I am proud to announce that our Band competed in the NYSSMA Majors at Hofstra this week and earned a Gold for their efforts!  In addition to the wonderful music, the different grade levels are holding their Field Days and other year-end culminations.  It has been nice seeing so many of you around the building!  And, in a few short weeks, we will of course be graduating an outstanding class of 5th graders!

As we wrap up this year and plan for next, we will be saying goodbye to a few staff members who have given much to Center Street over the years, and who have decided to retire.  I would like to thank Mrs. Lara Tuckman for her dedicated work as our primary Reading teacher, and Mrs. Liz Sallusto, who will be retiring from her position as a classroom Aide, after many years of service.  Finally, I would like to recognize the career of Bill Grabowski, who will be hanging up the art smock after 39 years of teaching Art at Center Street!  I know that you join me in wishing the best to all.

In closing, I would like to thank the PTA for their continual and enthusiastic support of us throughout the school year—the committee chairs and membership have been our partners, our supporters and our contributors in designing rich and rewarding experiences for the children.  In particular, I would like to give thanks to our Co-Presidents, Stephanie Helgeson and Jen Stanza for the leadership that they have provided over the course of this year.

With Spring also comes NYS testing for our students in grades 3-5.  As I write to you, the students are taking the English Language Arts Test.  The Math Test comes next on May 1st-2nd; the Science tests for 4th grade students are scheduled for May 29th and June 3rd.  As you know, our students typically do very well on all of these State assessments.  With Spring also comes planning for next year.  Thank you to all who have taken time to write to me to provide input for our student re-grouping process for the 2019-2020 school year.  We will begin this process in earnest next month.  We are also getting ready to welcome a new group of Kindergarten students.  Kindergarten Orientation is scheduled to take place on April 10th at 6:45, just before the PTA meeting at 8:00pm. Dr. Celano and Ms.Rutkoske will be joining us at the April 10th PTA meeting to talk about the District Budget.
