On May 9, the Herricks High School Cello Quintet performed at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall as part of the 40th annual Young Musicians concert.
The concert showcased the finalists of the chamber music competition run by the Chamber Music Society (CMS) of Lincoln Center. Only 12 high school ensembles from throughout the region were selected to participate in this prestigious event.
To be considered for the Alice Tully final performance, the Herricks Cello Quintet, made up of seniors, Preston Chan and Ryan Lo and juniors Constantine Cheung, Amanda Cui, and Ryan Yen and coached by Herricks High School Orchestra Director Catherine Birke, submitted applications and recordings, performed in the Long Island Regional Semi-Final concert held in March and attended two coaching sessions with CMS roster artists at Lincoln Center.
During their performance, the quintet was proud to premiere a new work, For the Best, by Nashville-based composer Kaitlyn Raitz. It was the first time the piece has been performed in New York City.
