On April 29, Herricks Middle School was honored to welcome Holocaust survivor and author Marion Lazan for an assembly with our seventh graders.
As told in her memoir, "Four Perfect Pebbles," Ms. Lazan shared with the students her incredibly terrifying experience as a prisoner in the infamous Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany when she was just a child. She was nine years old and just 35 pounds when they spent two weeks on a train with no food, water or bathroom facilities. Many people did not survive, including her father.
Once the war was over, she was saved by the kindness of strangers and nursed back to health before emigrating with her mother and brother to America.
Ms. Lazan brought with her the star patch that Jewish people were forced to wear at the time as a stark reminder of how fear and hate can create the worst atrocities the world has ever known. She pleaded with students to be kind, compassionate and to respect one another and to keep her story alive so history won't be repeated.
Following her moving and thoughtful presentation, Ms. Lazan answered questions before meeting personally with every student in the auditorium, giving them hugs, signing books and providing words of encouragement.
On May 20, Herricks looks forward to welcoming Marion Lazan back to speak with our eighth graders.
