HMS 6th Graders Explore Ancient Egypt on Long Island

The 6th Grade Orange Team had an educational adventure!

On April 2, we visited The Vanderbilt Mansion and Museum in Centerport, Long Island.

Students had the opportunity to study a 21st-Dynasty Egyptian mummy, examining its preserved remains, coffin, and X-rays.  The students also learned about William Vanderbilt's travels to Egypt, discussed mummification techniques throughout different periods, and made a hieroglyph bookmark to take home.

The brisk, sunny day allowed everyone to explore the beautiful mansion grounds. Students also discovered how the museum itself has historical significance—originally built by Vanderbilt to share his personal collection with the community while he traveled abroad.
