Herricks High School students achieved outstanding success at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair recently, earning multiple awards across both the Varsity and Junior Varsity divisions. Students were recognized for excellence in scientific research, innovation and presentation across a wide range of disciplines.
The competition culminated in a major milestone for the school as two students, Nikita Kumar and Emma Su, earned first place honors and qualified to advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, AZ this May, one of the most prestigious pre college science competitions in the world.
In the Varsity division, Nikita Kumar earned first place in Biology Related-Genomics category for “BRAINMAP‑NET: A Multilayer Convolutional Neural Network‑Based Tool for Clustering Glioma Mechanical Subregions Using Topological Modeling of MRE‑Derived Stiffness Gradients and Curvature,” while Emma Su earned first place in the Technology-Human/Machine Interface category for “Developing a Novel Adaptive Tuning Module for Real‑Time Frequency Correction in Radiofrequency Coils During Concurrent TMS‑fMRI.”
Additional Herricks students earned second and third place finishes, honorable mentions and special awards, including a Yale Science and Engineering Association Award.
Herricks students also delivered an impressive performance in the Junior Varsity division, highlighted by a first place award earned by Regina Choi in the Cellular and Molecular Biology category for “Investigating the Effects of Ret Deficiency on Gene Expression and Cellular Phenotypes in Non‑Enteric Nervous System Tissues in Hirschsprung Disease.” Additional JV students earned third place finishes and honorable mentions, further underscoring the strength of the program across all grade levels.
Andrea Brand, District Director of Science and Technology, praised the students’ accomplishments, stating, “Our students demonstrated an extraordinary level of commitment, creativity and scientific rigor at LISEF. Advancing to ISEF is a remarkable achievement for Nikita and Emma, and I am incredibly proud of all our students for the perseverance and passion they brought to their research.”
The district congratulates all participating students on their success and looks forward to supporting our ISEF competitors, Nikita Kumar and Emma Su, as they represent the school and community on the international stage this spring.
