Herricks High School and elementary social workers launched a meaningful collaboration to help students develop essential communication and social skills during recess. The initiative focused on the core values of respect and sportsmanship, ensuring that play remains a positive and inclusive experience for everyone.
As part of this district-wide effort, high school peer leaders visited Center Street, Denton Avenue and Searingtown. The visits began in the classroom, where the older students led discussions on how to promote healthy, supportive play. These conversations provided younger students with tangible ways to encourage their peers and handle challenges on the playground with integrity.
The learning then moved outdoors, where peer leaders facilitated activities that allowed students to put these new skills into practice. By engaging in organized play, the elementary students experienced firsthand how sportsmanship creates a better environment for everyone.
The sessions concluded with a thoughtful reflection period. Students shared how they felt during the activities and discussed ways they could continue to think of others and ensure inclusivity during their daily recess. This partnership highlights the power of student leadership and the importance of fostering a kind, connected community across all grade levels.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the district social workers and high school peer leaders for their vision and dedication to this initiative. By serving as mentors and role models, these students are helping to cultivate a district-wide culture of kindness and respect, providing our elementary learners with social-emotional tools that will serve them well throughout their lives.
