Herricks’ Center Street Elementary School is proud to debut the Makerspace, an innovative STEAM learning center where students can connect and engage in meaningful activities.
The Center Street Makerspace, affectionally referred to as “Cub Corner,” is designed to foster the growth and well-being of all students, offering a place where they can be inspired to create and challenge themselves and share in their learning experience with their classmates.
The Makerspace Collegial Circle, a collective of teachers who were responsible for the design and development of the space, have creating a variety of challenges and lessons in the Makerspace, all centered around the six competencies at the core of the district’s “Portrait of a Graduate”: Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Compassion and Confidence.
Classes come together in the Makerspace to participate in combined challenges, which not only enhance students' ability to collaborate but also provide opportunities to make new friends across different classes and grades, further strengthening the sense of community within our school.
At the end of each lesson, students reflect on which of the competencies they used most and consider how they can apply those skills in other areas of their learning.
The district is grateful to Gemini and PLTW Science Enrichment teacher Rachel Brillon and the Makerspace Collegial Circle members for creating such an incredible environment where students can grow as both learners and individuals.
