Superintendent of Schools
My name is Dr. Tony Sinanis and I am excited to serve our community as your new Superintendent of Schools. While I look forward to connecting with all of you in the coming weeks and months, I felt it was important to take a few minutes to introduce myself (at least via email) so you know a little something about me. I hope to make opportunities to meet in person in the fall.
Education has always been a priority in our family growing up in Woodside, Queens. Although my parents, who immigrated to this country from Greece in the 1950’s, only completed a middle school level education, they supported me on my journey to being the first college graduate in our family. Graduating college and completing my doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania is one of my proudest accomplishments. I thank my parents for the investment they made in me. While education has been a critical part of my journey, one of the most fulfilling experiences I have ever had is being a father. My son, Paul, is starting college this fall at Hofstra University, where he will be studying Sports Management. We currently live in Pelham Manor with my husband, Felix, who is an elementary school principal in Scarsdale.
Before coming to Herricks I worked as an educational leader for 17 years. Most recently I worked in Westchester where I was the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Leadership Development in Chappaqua Central School District and Superintendent of Schools in Hastings. Prior to that I spent the majority of my career on Long Island where I was the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in Plainedge and an elementary principal in both Jericho and Valley Stream. I started my career as a classroom teacher in New York City and in the Hewlett-Woodmere School District, where I taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades.
Although I have been in education for 25 years, I have always appreciated the opportunity to learn, grow, and try new things, which is what led me to Herricks. I am thrilled to be part of such an amazing community where we value education and work together to do what is in the best interest of our students, faculty, staff and families. I am also honored to build on the incredible work of Dr. Celano and to support our faculty, administrators and staff, in partnership with the Board of Education, as we strive towards excellence. We know the education our children receive today will impact their trajectory and knowledge forever.
