Social Studies
At Herricks School District, our Social Studies program is dedicated to the cultivation of well-rounded individuals who have a comprehensive understanding of human society. Through the exploration of United States History, World History, Geography, Economics, Civics, Citizenship, and Government, the Social Studies Department ensures students are equipped with a robust knowledge base. Our classrooms and curriculum promote cultural awareness as well as civic engagement and encourage all students to actively contribute to their communities at local, state, and national levels. Our approach fosters critical thinking skills aligned with the K-12 Social Studies Framework. The Social Studies program provides deep historical and societal insights that equip students with the tools they need to succeed and thrive in our rapidly growing global society.
The goal of the Social Studies Department is to develop a student body which thinks critically and which:
-
Raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely
-
Gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively, comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards
-
Thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing, as need be, their assumptions, implications, and practical consequences
-
Communicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems
