AP Environmental Science Field Trip!
AP Environmental Science students from Herricks High School spent three days exploring the Hempstead Plains at Nassau Community College. Upon arrival, they were greeted by Professor Douglas Schmid, who delivered a lecture on the geologic history of Long Island and the abiotic factors that shaped this unique grassland prairie, found exclusively in Nassau County.
Professor Schmid explained that the prairie was intentionally burned in April 2023 and again in March 2025. Students were then challenged to consider the question: How do prescribed burns affect the biodiversity of grassland prairies?
To investigate, they conducted a biodiversity index of both burned and unburned plots of land. Their findings revealed that the burned plots were free of invasive species and supported a thriving population of native plants. The stewards of the Hempstead Plains hope to conduct future burns, and the data collected by our students has helped inform that decision!
The Science and Technology Department of Herricks Public Schools encourages all students to experience the many disciplines and aspects of science, both theoretical and experimental.
Using the scientific method as the basis for teaching, students will be capable of developing a scientific viewpoint that transcends individual science disciplines. This will result in a logical, evidence-based approach to problem-solving that will allow students to make informed decisions about personal, societal and global issues.
