Mathematics
The learning of mathematics takes place in a student-centered environment where students are actively involved in the investigation and discovery of mathematical principles. In the process, students learn the language of mathematics, appreciate the beauty of mathematical ideas, and study the relevance of their applications across the disciplines.

Calculator Information
Calculators are essential tools in mathematics. NYS allows calculators for certain assessments and Regents exams. Please read below to see which calculators are used in our classes. There are restrictions on calculators, so before you purchase a calculator, please read the attached note from NYS.
- NYS Calculator Guidelines
- TI-84 Quick Reference - Algebra 1 (MathBits)
- TI-84 Quick Reference - Trigonometry (MathBits)
- TI-84 Quick Reference - Algebra 2 (MathBits)
- TI-89
Scientific Calculator TI-30XIIS
Students in Math 7, Math 7A and Pre-Algebra will need to have a scientific calculator. This calculator is also useful for all Regents level science classes during High School.
TI-84 Plus
Students in Algebra 1 and all subsequent math classes: TI-84+ is required. The school district has used calculators for loan. Students may choose to purchase their own personal calculator since it will be used in all math classes until the time of graduation. Students who borrow calculators from the school are responsible for returning the calculator in good condition at the end of the school year. If the calculator is lost or damaged, the student will be expected to pay the replacement cost.
Students will not be allowed to use any calculators that do the following:
- The calculator must not make use of a Computer Algebraic System (CAS).
- The calculator must not have measuring capabilities.
- The calculator must not be able to communicate with other devices.
TI-89
Students in AP Calculus AB or BC will use the TI-89 graphing calculator. This calculator will be lent to you by your teacher. Students who borrow calculators from the school are responsible for returning the calculator in good condition at the end of the school year. If the calculator is lost or damaged, the student will be expected to pay the replacement cost.

Competitions
The AMC mathematics contests will be administered at Herricks High School. Students participating in these competitions can qualify for the American Invitation Mathematical Competition (AIME). Depending on their AIME performance, students may be eligible for participation in the national and international math Olympiads.
Students interested in participating in these math contests can obtain more specific details from their math teachers about the administration of these tests. We encourage everybody who would like to take the AMCs to explore the links below to familiarize themselves with sample questions from past AMC tests: The Art of Problem Solving
