Hot Tips for Studying

  • 1. LISTENING
             *pay careful attention to what you are hearing
             *think about what you are hearing 

    2. OBSERVING
             *look carefully at something to see all that might be there
             *think about what you are looking at 

    3. UNDERSTANDING DIRECTIONS
             *read all the directions through once
             *read the directions a second time as you are carrying them out
            *be sure that you understand what you are being asked to do before you begin to work. If you are doing an activity where you are allowed to ask questions, ask someone to help you with anything you are not sure of. 

    4. CATEGORIES
             *a name for a group of ideas or things that belong together in some way
            *categories are useful, they help you organize things and understand them more easily.

    5. PUT IT IN ORDER
            *sequence means one thing coming after another in certain order. It can help you organize things and understand them more easily.

              ex. Morning Schedule
                  7:00 Breakfast
                  7:30 Bus
                  7:45 Period I (Science)
                  8:30 Period 2 (English) 

    How important is it?
            *make a decision to do one thing instead of another, put things in the order of their importance.

             ex. Science homework
                Short essay due in 2 days
                Book report due next month

    6. PICTURES IN YOUR MIND
            *Sometimes your thoughts are words and ideas. Sometimes your thoughts are pictures. Visualize means to see a picture of something in your mind. 

    TIPS that may help you visualize more clearly:

           1.Pretend you are actually there in the scene that you are trying to
                 visualize.
           2.Don't let your mind wander. If your thoughts do wander, bring
                 back to the scene you are visualizing.
               3. Relax and let your mind do the work

    7. PROBLEM SOLVING - BE A DETECTIVE
            *this is something you do every day. If you answer a question correctly in school, you have solved a problem. When you can't remember where you have put something and you set out to find it, you are solving a problem.
            *when a detective sets out to solve a mystery, she/he has to start out with an open mind. (being able to think about things in new and different ways)
