Summer Review Assignments 2021
The math department suggests that you take time during your summer break to review some important topics that will help you to prepare for the Math Course that you are scheduled to take next year. It is recommended that each student creates a Khan Academy account using his/her Herricks google login. Each math topic within the Khan Academy course is covered through video tutorials, interactive practice, assessment, and skill summaries all with instant feedback to help students track their progress toward mastery.

Since 1997, girls in grades 10-12 have been participating in the All Girls/All Math summer camp offered at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Map). This weeklong summer mathematics camp for high school girls provides a stimulating and supportive environment for girls to develop their mathematical ability and interest. Participants learn about the exciting mathematics of Codes, interact with peers who share an interest in mathematics, and work with female mathematics graduate students and professors who earned their Ph.Ds. from Nebraska. The campers stay in a residence hall and are chaperoned by female mathematics graduate students and undergraduate students. All Girls/All Math is one of 18 Young Scholars Programs across the nation supported by the American Mathematical Society. All Girls/All Math has been included in the Ultimate Guide to Summer Opportunities for Teens: 200 Programs That Prepare You For College Success book as one of 200 of the best summer programs for teens across the nation.
It is an intensive summer camp for mathematically gifted students from around the globe. It is designed for bright middle and high school students who wish to hone their problem solving skills in particular and further their mathematics education in general. Many of our participants seek to improve their performance on contests such as AMC10/12, AIME, or USAMO.
COSMOS is an intensive four-week summer residential program for students who have demonstrated an aptitude for academic and professional careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Talented and motivated students completing grades 8-12 have the opportunity to work with renowned faculty, researchers and scientists in state-of-the-art facilities, while exploring advanced STEM topics far beyond the courses usually offered in California high schools. Through challenging curricula that are both hands-on and lab intensive, COSMOS fosters its students’ interests, skills, and awareness of educational and career options in STEM fields.
Students apply to one of the four University of California’s COSMOS campuses — UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz. While each campus employs the best practices in STEM education, the curriculum of each program builds on the unique teaching and research expertise of its faculty and host campus. Each campus can only accommodate about 160-200 participants, so selection is competitive. A typical COSMOS student has a GPA of 3.5 or above. Students must have achieved academic excellence.
HCSSiM is an intensive six-week encounter with college-level mathematics for talented and highly motivated high school students. It is demanding and expanding. Participants spend a major portion of each day actively engaged in doing mathematics (not simply learning the results of mathematics). HCSSiM students live in the dorms at Hampshire College in Massachusetts for six summer weeks, and study and play in its fields, woods, and academic buildings (not typically in that order).
The daily schedule includes 4 hours of morning classes (Mon-Sat), the pre-supper Prime Time Theorem, and evening problem sessions. Afternoons are devoted to reading, rest, recreation, occasional trips to town, and informal study. Participants have unparalleled access to faculty members in classrooms, at meals, and in the program dorm. Productive collaborations continue long after the program, and many lifelong friendships are forged.
Our alumni come from (and end up) all around the world, but remain close in spirit. Those who have the means to make it back to Hampshire College join us for Yellow Pigs Day in July, and so students have an opportunity to meet (and sing carols, play frisbee, juggle… with) notables in math, science, tech, and many more fields.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF ACADEMICALLY WHILE EARNING COLLEGE CREDIT Neuroscience, film, philosophy, creative writing, and computer science—these are just a few of the 200-plus courses you can choose from. Branch out from typical high school offerings, and explore more advanced topics that aren’t available back home.
SMaRT is a two-week summer program at Texas A&M University. It is intended to facilitate interest in mathematics of advanced high school students. High school students of age 14-18, who are US citizens or permanent residents, are eligible to apply.
The camp will provide an intensive learning environment in mathematics, where high school students will learn not only useful mathematical facts, but also how to approach mathematical problems, prove mathematical statements, and write the results.
The Mathematical Olympiad Program (abbreviated MOP) is a 3-week intensive problem solving camp held at the Carnegie Mellon University to help high school students prepare for math olympiads, especially the International Mathematical Olympiad. While the program is free to participants, invitations are limited to the top finishers on the USAMO.
A program designed to introduce high school students to current developments and research in the sciences and to encourage the next generation of researchers to develop and retain a love of mathematics and science.
The central goal of the Ross Program has always been to instruct bright young students in the art of mathematical thinking and to inspire them to discover for themselves that abstract ideas are valuable and important. First year participants take the basic course in number theory. For most students, this is the first time they are asked to consider entirely new questions, to develop methods that they have not seen before, and to justify every answer.
The value of a mathematics education lies not only in obtaining proficiency in computational tasks, but also in building a foundation for critical thinking. Students who have never asked why things work the way they do are not prepared to lead the way to future scientific innovation. It is precisely this independence of thought and questioning attitude that the Ross Program strives to nurture.
The Rutgers Young Scholars Program in Discrete Mathematics is a summer program for mathematically talented high school students. It provides a mathematically rich environment to high school students interested in mathematics, and is designed to encourage them to consider careers in the mathematical sciences.
Selected students participate in an intensive four-week residential academic program that provides a challenging introduction to discrete mathematics -- a new and growing area of the mathematical sciences with many applications on the cutting edge of modern research.
During the program, you will develop and enhance your problem-solving abilities by applying mathematical concepts to a wide range of problems. You will also meet distinguished professionals in the field of discrete mathematics who will serve as role models and mentors and help you decide if mathematics is the right field for you. Teaching assistants who are embarking on their own careers in mathematics will provide additional academic support.
Stanford University Mathematics Camp (SUMaC) leads participants on a journey in advanced mathematics through lectures, guided research, and group problem solving. In a social environment centered on mathematics, participants explore current lines of mathematical research, the historical development of important areas of mathematics, and applications across scientific disciplines.
The program includes six intensive two-week courses taught by university professors on topics that change from year to year. In the past, students have studied methods of argument, combinatorics, hyperbolic geometry, game theory, group theory, coding theory, and much more. In addition, there are twelve guest lectures on a wide variety of subjects and in many different formats, allowing students to glimpse even more mathematical areas as well as participate in hands-on mathematical activities. When not in class, students work on problems in groups or individually, have mathematical discussions with the Teaching Assistant Counselors, and participate in social events, sports, and weekly Saturday outings. They develop many new interests and close friendships, the end of the program coming way too soon.
The MIT Women's Technology Program (WTP) is a rigorous four-week summer academic and residential experience where female high school students explore engineering through hands-on classes, labs, and team-based projects in the summer after 11th grade.
The Engineering Summer Academy at Penn (ESAP) welcomes highly motivated and talented students to explore Engineering at the college level. The Academy’s intensive, three-week programs combine sophisticated theory with hands-on practical experience in cutting edge technologies. Work with leading faculty while earning college credit, live on Penn’s historic campus, and connect with new friends from around the world.
