  • Denton - 3rd Grade Mysteries Unit

The student's in Mrs. DiOrio's 3rd grade class are currently reading Mysteries. In learning about this genre, they were fortunate to have Detective Yisel and Detective Pat from the 106th the squad visit their classroom. The detectives explained to the students that solving mysteries is like putting a puzzle together; they need to use all the pieces to complete the entire mission! The students asked many questions, saw how a DNA kit works, held and touched equipment, and truly learned how “real“ detectives solve mysteries. Detectives Pat and Yisel even showed their kids their unmarked car! The class truly enjoyed the visit from the detectives. The students received badges, coloring books, NYPD basketballs and stuffed animal bulls to encourage the children to stop “bull”ying.

  • Denton - Flashlight Friday

The idea of Flashlight Friday came from a blog that third grade teacher, Mrs. Glykos had read. She knew the students at Denton Avenue would be very motivated by it. Mrs. Glykos launched our September Back To School Reading with Flashlight Friday. The children came to school on each Friday with their flashlight and book. The children had quiet reading time with only the light provided by each flashlight. The children chose a cozy spot throughout the building and used their flashlights to enhance their independent reading.

  • Denton - Start With Hello

During the week of September 23-27, 2019, Denton Avenue School celebrated “Start with Hello” week! “Start with Hello” is a program organized by the Sandy Hook Promise to create a sense of belonging, build community, and focus on inclusivity! Students participated in several activities throughout the week that were designed to foster this sense of community and build positive healthy relationships. "Hey Day" is one example, where students and staff wore name tags to encourage all to say "hello" to each other throughout the building. Teachers engage students in activities that fostered "buddies" or partnerships with classmates and/or other classes. Parents were encouraged to "buddy up" with their children and play a game together.

The Denton Avenue Band students put on an amazing Spring concert. The Denton Fifth Grade Chorus sang songs from various genres of music during the first of two spring concerts. These included a song sung entirely in German called Marienwurmchen (Ladybug) a song written by the composer Johannes Brahms and later edited by Mary Goetze. Also included were A Million Dreams, a contemporary song from the movie "The Greatest Showman", and Tyger written by Elaine Hagenberg. The Herricks Music Boosters commissioned this piece for the students in the 5th and 6th grade Herricks choirs.
