Welcome to the Tell Me a Story Student Gallery Website!

Tell Me a Story is a project in which students were asked to comtemplate the following essential questions:

How does culture shape the way we see ourselves, others, and the world?
How does my culture shape me?
Why is it important to understand culture?

The purpose of this project is to encourage children to accept and celebrate their differences. We want to help all children develop a positive self-concept and feel proud of whom they are. If this positive sense of self and others is allowed to flourish, today's children will become adults who accept and affirm differences, identify unfair situations, and strive to eliminate racism of any sort. As Dr. Gary Mar, Member of the Suffolk County human Rights, Asian American Center, and Stony Brook University tells us:

“Projects like [Tell Me a Story] educate us all. Multiculturism need not be limited to a “cultural tourism” which celebrates food and dance.…Historian Ronald Takaki has predicted the increasing importance of such projects: “We can be certain that much of our society’s future will be influenced by which ‘mirror’ we choose to see ourselves. America does not belong to one race or group, the [children] in [our project] remind us, and Americans have been constantly redefining their national identity…By sharing their stories, they invite us to see ourselves in a different mirror.”

In order to meet the goals of the project, students worked on various activities, including reading and reviewing multicultural books and creating digital stories about family treasures.
