The Devil's Arithmetic Difficulty: Challenging The Devil’s Arithmetic By Jane Yolen Book Review by Alex Have you ever wondered how it was to live during the tortuous Holocaust? Well if you read "The Devil’s Arithmetic," written by Jane Yolen, you will be happy that you didn’t. This book is a historical fiction chapter book. It’s about a young girl named Hannah. During the Passover Seder, she goes through a portal back in time to the Holocaust. She learns so much about her past and her family’s past. Hannah deals with many problems in the book, including living in a contraction camp for about two months. While she was there, she made friends with a few girls, one of whom turned out to be her aunt. She also gets yelled at by her grandpa because she doesn’t know much about her culture. Once she mimicked a tattoo that she saw on her Grandfather’s arm and he became very upset. She learned later on, why this upset her grandfather so much. This book took place during World War II. Hannah learns about herself and the horror of the Holocaust. I like this book because there was a very happy ending and a great story line. I would recommend it to any kid 4th grader or older.
