Project Mulberry
by Linda Sue Park

Difficulty: Challenging

Three cheers for Project Mulberry! Project Mulberry, written by Linda Sue Park, is an excellent fiction chapter book for grades 4-6. This book is about a Korean-American girl named Julia Lee Song and her best friend, Patrick. As members of the WGGL (Work, Grow, Give, Live) Club, they are required to research and raise an animal. They choose (rather, Patrick chooses) the silkworm. Julia has some problems with this, though. How can she express them to Patrick without hurting his feelings? A couple of problems that the characters in this book faced are being truthful and a lack of communication. Julia wasn’t truthful to Patrick when she didn’t want to use the silkworm as their WGGL project, and the two of them did too much assuming about each other’s feelings about the project instead of communicating, and that caused problems. Linda Sue Park was born in Urbana, Illinois on March 25, 1960. Her parents are Korean immigrants. Other books she wrote are The Kite Fighters and A Single Shard. So, if need a really satisfying book to read, try Project Mulberry!
