Too Many Tamales
by Gary Soto

Difficulty: Easy Reading

Gary Soto wrote this great book. He was born in Fresno, California but now lives in Berkley, California. Gary has won so many awards for his emotional poetry and books. Some of the books he wrote are "Chato’s Kitchen" and "Mercy on These Chimps."

In "Too Many Tamales," the main character, Maria, is helping her mom make tamales for her family. Maria and her mom make tamales on Mexican holidays. Maria is so happy that she is being treated like an adult. Maria gets into trouble, though, when she decides to put on her mother's ring on without asking permission. Then she loses it in the masa (tamale dough) and cooks it in the oven! So she asks her cousins to help her find her mother’s ring. The four cousins don’t know what to do. The answer was to eat the 24 tamales! To find out what happens to Maria, you’ll have to read the book!
