"Homeless Bird," by Gloria Whelan, is a heartwarming adventure about one girl's fight to survive. It’s realistic fiction.

The book is about an Indian girl named Koly. Her husband dies shortly after her marriage. Her father- in-law dies 2 years later. She tries to survive after being left alone in the crowded city of Vrindavin with only a few rupees (The Indian form of money. 43 rupees are equal to an American dollar). Koly faces many problems such as a fixed young marriage and no money. When she is left in Vrindavin, she has no food or shelter and has to sleep on the street. She eventually finds a job and is able to share an apartment with a friend. Then she meets the man of her dreams.

Gloria Whelan is a poet and an author. She lives in a small cabin in Michigan. Gloria wrote the famous books The Indian School; Once on the Island and Miranda’s Last Stand.
