Honeysuckle House Difficulty: Challenging Are you diagnosed with needing to read an emotional, realistic fiction junior novel? Then to cure your sickness I think you need to read Honeysuckle House by Andrea Cheng. This story is about two girls named Sarah and Ting (Tina). Sarah misses her best friend Victoria who has just moved away. Tina (Ting) is new to the U.S (Ohio); she has just come from Shanghai, China. Sarah is now paired with Tina at school since they are both Chinese (even if Sarah doesn’t speak a word of it). Now together, or by themselves, they go through many ups and downs. They figure out problems and they somehow become good friends throughout this book. Although Sarah still misses her friend Victoria she has a new friend, and Tina now has a friend to help her with her problems (starting school, leaving Shanghai, learning English, etc.)This story’s time period is about around 2002. I actually had an experience like this. When I was in 2nd grade there was a new girl who was from my culture (Malayalam) and I didn’t speak much of it, and we were stuck being paired together. But soon we became friends and we each learned something about each other and helped each other. Mrs. Cheng (the author) actually wrote this book about her two daughters. Her older daughter had a friend who came from China. Her younger daughter had a friend named Victoria who had to leave so she actually wrote two books. Then she showed it to her editor, and he liked it. Mrs. Cheng actually grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, but her family originally came from Hungary, but her family lived in Australia and then immigrated to the U.S in 1954. Mrs. Cheng has also written many other books like Marika, and The Lace Dowry. If you are convinced this book will cure your sickness then go to your library and check out Honeysuckle House.
