Korean

Halmoni's Day
by Edna Coe Bercaw

Difficulty: Easy Reading

Jennifer, a Korean American, is worried that her halmoni (grandmother), visiting from Korea, will embarrass her at her school's Grandparents' Day because she can’t speak English. The problem is just that, Jennifer’s grandma can’t speak English so Jennifer is uncomfortable with her grandma speaking. If you want to know the outcome, you’ll have to read the story.

The author of this book is Edna Coe Bercaw. She is Korean, and she says and I quote, “Being of Korean decent, but only having visited Korea twice, I knew very little of the country’s traditions and culture.” She had only been there twice which resulted in the fact that she couldn’t communicate with her grandma. She was inspired to write this book when her kids were preparing for their school’s Grandparent’s Day. The illustrator is Robert Hunt. He has a website where you can see many of his oil paintings. I highly recommend this heartwarming story.
