Did you ever wonder about the Great Depression? Author Christopher Paul Curtis talks about the Depression in a work of historical fiction called "Bud Not Buddy." This book won the Newbery Medal. An African-American kid named Bud is trying to find his father, Herman E. Calloway. The story takes place in Flint, Michigan and the year is 1936. The time period in American history is the Great Depression. It was hard growing up for Bud because he lost his father. It was also difficult growing up in the Great Depression because black people had to do a lot of work. White people were really prejudiced towards black people. Also, no one had jobs because of the Great Depression. When you don’t have a job you can be homeless and poor.

Christopher Paul Curtis grew up in Flint, Michigan and also wrote "The Watson’s Go to Birmingham" which also won the Newbery. He has a great website where you can go to learn about how to be a great writer and also more about his books. This an appropriate book to read because it is a great book.
