Lily's Garden of India Difficulty: Easy Reading Did you ever wonder what it would be like to talk to a flower? That is exactly what happened in the book Lily’s Garden of India by Jeremy Smith and illustrated by Rob Hefferan. This book is a fantasy picture book. In this book there is a little American girl named Lily. Her mother has a garden and Lily goes there many times. One day she goes on a new path that leads her to a section with flowers from India. Then she actually finds herself in India. There she finds amazing talking flowers. They teach her about the culture and flowers of India. For example, jasmine flowers are put in a girl’s hair for decoration and marigolds are given as gifts to the Hindu gods. Just like Lily, I also learned about other cultures. When I go to my friend’s house she teaches me about her Indian culture. I learned that on special occasions the girls wear a long skirt and a shirt. The author, Jeremy Smith, is a young author. He lives in East Sussex, England. This is his first fiction book. He has also written four nonfiction books. One is Kids that Ruled: The Last Emperor. I recommend this book for first and second graders. If you love adventure and have a great imagination you will love this book. By: Laura
