LIBRARY SKILLS PROGRAM:

As part of the 7th grade skills rotation, students travel through Library Skills for five weeks.  During that time they have uninterrupted access to the resources of the Media Center and receive training in all of the systems we run.  Topics covered include:

  • Library Media Center Webpage & Vocabulary

  • Automated Card Catalog (Keyword/Boolean Searching)

  • Bibliographic Formats - see Herricks HS citations page: http://www.herricks.org/highschool.cfm?subpage=73

  • NOVEL Databases

  • Internet (Google Navigation Techniques)

  • Focus on NOTE-TAKING skills

Students work on an independent project, creating a bibliography on a topic of personal interest.  This demonstrates their ability to locate and to properly cite information wherever it exists.  In addition, students work cooperatively, creating a final group project which reviews and reinforces what they have learned.  These group projects take many forms, the most popular of which is the GAME (either a Board Game or a Game Show).  During the presentations of these projects the entire class participates and has fun while they review.

Check out this great video we use in library skills class to illustrate the "information age" :
